ARTHUR "HARPO" MARX

Stephen Johnson

Although a Californian from the moment he and his brothers dominated film comedies, Arthur "Harpo" Marx was a lovable, eager and very athletic croqueteer. Whenever he returned to Long Island or to Alexander Woollcott's island on Lake Bomoseen in the summer. Usually clad only in the briefest of trunks, (even when others were in flannels) Harpo would just bound around the court, laughing and stretching, mouth full of an entire pack of gum. His marriage to the lovely Susan Fleming and his eventual retirement to family life in Palm Springs, California, ended his croquet days but he was one of the pioneer fans indeed.

Arthur "Harpo" Marx was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1979.
