NATIONAL CROQUET MUSEUM

Known more for his savage, brilliant wit and his poker acumen than for his croquet skill, George Kaufman nevertheless was an accurate and very precise player. He began play on the spacious and interestingly irregular lawn of the Herbert Bayard Swope's in Great Neck, Long Island, comparing it to Bucks County. The most distinguished feature of his game was the unique manner in which he would bend 'way over to hold his mallet — the handle extending from beneath his right armpit, both hands gripping the stick itself just above the mallet head. It was not great for distance but hellishly accurate for wickets and position play.  

George S. Kaufman was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1979.
