All great sports have had brother acts; in basball who can forget the Meusels, Bob and Emil; the Deans, Dizzy and Daffy; the Ferrells, Wes and Rick; and others: In golf, Jay and Lionel Herbert had many successes, in basketball the Van Arsdales were geat players. In croquet the late Hawks brothers — Howard and Bill — were among those who dominated the game on the West Coast in the '40s and '50s. The silent and cool Howard, truly a great film director-producer and the brilliant shotmaker but choleric tempered Bill were always formidable.

All great sports have had brother acts; in baseball who can forget the Meusels, Bob and Emil; the Deans, Dizzy and Daffy; the Ferrells, Wes and Rick; and others: In golf, Jay and Lionel Herbert had many successes, in basketball the Van Arsdales were great players. In croquet the late Hawks brothers — Howard and Bill — were among those who dominated the game on the West Coast in the '40s and '50s. The silent and cool Howard, truly a great film director-producer and the brilliant shot maker but choleric tempered Bill were always formidable. Howard, whose directing talents ranged from hilarious comedy (Bringing Up Baby with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant) to serious westerns (Red River starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift), and his brother are both sadly gone, Howard in 1977.
Howard's contribution to our game was thoughtful strategy, sound shot making and unfailing politeness. He also was married to beautiful women (not at the same time), such as the present Lady "Slim" Keith and Dee Hartford.
Howard Hawks was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1980.
