NATIONAL CROQUET MUSEUM

William (Bill) W. Campbell has been actively involved with the sport of croquet since his introduction to the game by friends Fred and Pat Supper. He and his wife Marjorie first played croquet at the Supper’s Round Island Mallet Club Invitational in 1986. The following spring, the Campbell’s signed up for the USCA National Croquet School in Palm Beach and they’ve never looked back. They’ve embraced the game passionately, and have spent the last 18 years traveling, playing, learning, promoting, administering and supporting the sport in a myriad of ways.

Bill is the co-founder and first president of the Greenwich Croquet Club. Bill and Marjorie built two croquet courts at their home (Bayberry Mallet Club), which has served as a host site for games and social events for most Greenwich Invitationals over the years. Everyone who ever attended a party at the Campbell’s would agree their hospitality is second to none. Under Bill’s leadership, the Greenwich Croquet Club grew to over 100 members and also received the USCA Outstanding Club of the Year award in 1988.

A strong competitor, Bill has been bedeviling opponents from across the country throughout his career. He achieved a 2 handicap and has played in countless club, invitational, regional and national events from Canada to Manhattan to Mexico and almost every club in between. His tournament highlights include big wins at Ocean Reef’s Tri-Club Invitational, the Gasparilia Invitational, the Merion Cricket Club Invitational, a USCA Regional Doubles title with Dick Brackett at the New England/Mid-Atlantic Regional and a 2002 National Masters Doubles Championship with partner Dwight Mayer.

In 1989, he accepted a position on the board of the Croquet Foundation of America, retiring from the position of vice president after serving for almost 10 years. He is currently the USCA Regional Vice President for the Northeast Region. Bill’s strong, “let’s get it done” personality combined with his great sense of humor have made him a successful and respected board and committee member throughout his years of work on behalf of the sport in America.

“This is one of the greatest thrills of my life — even better than winning a big tournament”, he said when learning of his election to the Hall of Fame.

William W. “Bill” Campbell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
